Exploring our scientific, cultural, and emotional attitudes to the natural cycle of ageing, The Coming of Age is a radically accessible exhibition featuring commissioned installations and historic artefacts alongside significant works by acclaimed artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Gillian Wearing, Serena Korda, Rory Pilgrim, Paula Rego, Maija Tammi, and Suzanne Lacey. The setwork design subverts the ageist stereotype of ‘showing your age’ by actively celebrating visible wear. The material language embraces imperfection and the natural marks of time, while the structural system physically accrues support as visitors move through the show, highlighted in a deep, deliberate tone of red. The project is underpinned by a rigorous approach to re-use. Large sections of the previous show’s build were consciously retained and adapted. Where new elements were required, they are inherently modular, employing simple and legible construction methods designed to encourage future reassembly. This ethos of care extends directly to the visitor experience. The space has been designed from the ground up for radical accessibility, seamlessly integrating BSL interpretation, touch objects, tactile navigation, audio descriptions, and dedicated lights-up sessions for visitors with sensory needs.
