178 – Wild

Wild is an exhibition about our relationship with the natural world. Definitions of this relationship are represented differently across cultures and time but the thread connecting them is a degree of control over nature: from romantic landscape artists gazing out across semi-fictional landscapes, to indigenous groups restoring their ancestral lands after a damaging colonial legacy, to communities rewilding small parts of urban Manchester. The exhibition set design places visitors in a series of spaces which represent interior and exterior environments, encouraging them to look out, over, under and between, often seeing objects in different contexts to consider their own definition of ‘wild’. A material palette with contrasting natural and un-natural aspects exaggerates the duality of the definition of ‘wild’ as controlled nature.
