The project, ‘Under One Roof’, proposes a robust and poetic building which is at once part of, and made of, the surrounding landscape. It seeks to embody and enhance the specific character of the unique site location in a sensitive but memorable way. The materially rich and characterful building provides an accessible hub to rest, eat, meet and enjoy the variety of activities available at Silecroft Beach and the surrounding landscape. A large timber-framed roof tilts towards the sea, sheltering the building’s internal and external programme from the often harsh c onditions moving in from the water. Large stone gabion walls shift and rotate in plan to frame views of the sea and Black Combe Fell whilst protecting the enclosing walls and roof supporting structure. The proposal works with the Silecroft local vernacular, using traditional materials and construction methods, but with subtle changes to produce a robust, characterful and contemporary piece of architecture that is once familiar and memorable.
