The Rotunda AND THE BATHING HOUSE, FOUNTAINS ABBEY STUDLEY ROYAL
Client: The National Trust
Status: Shortlisted Proposal
An invited competition, part of the Folly! programme at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.
MUTT's Bathing House re-imagines a lost folly in the Studley Royal Water Gardens. It takes the form of an elevated ringed walkway, projecting from the sloped landscape behind it, and creates an enclosed azure garden.
The Rotunda is a fragment of a giant, inhabitable Ionic column. The hollowed out structure contains a camera obscura that projects a live view of carefully selected views onto a hanging plate within in the space. The projected image isolates and frames specific views of the surrounding landscape reminding the viewer of the structured, ordered and formally arranged network of follies that exist within Studley Royal.
